Mia has devoted much of her life to the healing and life-giving power of creativity both with herself as well as with children and families in need.

She believes that art is play and we are not truly well without it.

In Mia’s Words:

I was born in Campbell River B.C. the last of six daughters in an eccentric, compulsively creative family. There was not much in the realm of the linear or practical that was learned. Spirituality, emotions, creativity and food reigned supreme. For me school life was all about title pages and coloring maps. I still do not know my times tables or the capitals of anywhere and when someone asks me how big something is….I show them.

The sweet spots of my childhood were anything that had to do with making. My sisters and I would spend ecstatic hours on end making anything and everything out of anything and everything.

In grade four it became clear to me that I was a “maker”. My classmates would come to me if there was a special thing they wanted drawn or created. In grade 5 my art teacher asked to keep one of my drawings for himself. In grade 7, I won first prize in a Valentine’s brown bag decorating contest….these were just a few of many signs and affirmations along the way.

I made art because it was ecstatic, joyful, pleasing and I also made it to please. I remember an older cousin whom I adored, loving a bunny I had drawn. I spent the rest of the day drawing bunnies and offering them to her….small acts of devotion and love….

Still to this day I make art for the same reasons… because it is ecstatic to do so…and because the products are my small acts of devotion and love….to all of you…to humanity…I offer thus…
